Dr. John Deeming: The Fly Man

To mark the International Year of the Fly, Adam meets one of the world's greatest experts on flies, Dr. John Deeming from the National Museum Wales.

This week Adam is in conversation with Dr. John Deeming, Honorary Research Fellow at the National Museum Wales and one of the world’s greatest experts on flies. He has identified dozens of new species of fly - and he has over twenty species named after him!

John's career spans over six decades. He began as a scientific assistant in the Entomology Department at the Natural History Museum in London in 1955. He later spent thirteen years northern Nigeria working as an agricultural entomologist, specialising in protecting crops from insects. He returned to the UK in 1980 to take up a post as curator at the National Museum Wales and he's been there ever since. Despite retiring in 2004 he's still as busy as ever - and still fascinated by flies.

This year has been proclaimed the International Year of the Fly. It's a year to celebrate the significance, diversity and beauty of flies and their role in nature and in human society. And in April this year it was also John Deeming’s 80th birthday. So, what better time could there be for a conversation with this fascinating man whose infectious enthusiasm for a creature which most of us would just swat away knows no bounds.
