Script:

Good morning. Today is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Ghandi, a huge and powerful figure who dramatically affected the history of the Indian sub-continent. And while he was and remains in some respects a controversial figure, to many he is the Father of modern India.
But for me he also raises a broader question – what is it about some people that enables them to transcend the flaws of humanity to achieve so much and become so iconic?
Perhaps one of the things that singles them out is that they had the right idea and the right gifts to make change happen at the right time.Β  People like William Wilberforce, Florence Nightingale, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela.Β  They each changed the world for the better through a clarity of vision and a determination to make that vision happen.
The world is often a complex and confusing place. When someone emerges who seems able to explain everything and assures us that they have the answers the attraction is obvious.Β Β
What I find actually encouraging in all this is the fact that so many of these heroic figures achieved so much despite their flaws.Β Β
And that both challenges me and gives me hope.
Most of us may never be heroes but we can still try to be the right person, in the right place at the right time to offer love, support, help and encouragement to our families, friends and the people we come into contact with day by day
Father God, history is full of big names who had a huge impact on the world and we thank you for their achievements.Β  But may we never forget that, daily, every one of us has opportunities to share Your love with those around us in ways that may not change the world but can still bless the lives of those we meet.Β  AmenΒ Β
