Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:
It’s now two weeks until my busiest season – the High-holidays, starting with Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year. It’s hard to describe just how much preparation is needed so I – together with my wonderful synagogue team – can enable everyone visiting the community to feel inspired, connected with each other, with their faith and with God. However, I tend to be a last-minute person and the temptation to procrastinate can be overwhelming: to ad lib, rather than script, to wing it rather than rehearse. But just one word is enough to banish those thoughts and get preparing and I’ve actually been working on my sermons, singing, jokes and smiling technique for weeks.
That word is ‘Elul’ – the name of the Jewish month that precedes Rosh Hashanah – the New Year. During Elul – of which today is 17th – I can’t hide from my responsibilities. Jews all over the world blow the shofar – a ram’s horn – each morning during Elul; it’s a daily alarm call to what lies around the corner. Twice each day we declare our desire to live in harmony with God and for part of the month, we pray for forgiveness early each morning. Elul reminds me to always prepare properly, not procrastinate, to meet my responsibilities. Many Jewish scholars would tremble at the very mention of the word ‘Elul’, as it forced them to look their obligations in the eye.
I believe that we all benefit from a trigger word like ‘Elul’ to get us motivated. I’d guess that many of us prefer putting off resolving an argument rather than dealing with it now. Some of us are guilty of postponing exam prep to the last minute, writing an essay on the night before it’s due, avoiding speaking to a difficult colleague, even when we know it will get worse if we leave it. An ancient rabbi noticed that the letters of ‘Elul’ spell out the Hebrew words describing a beautiful two-way relationship with God. I believe when we are prepared for the big events in life, if we tackle problems now rather than later, we feel alive, happy and proud to live as responsible adults. And I’d like to think that when the New Year arrives, all that preparation will have paid off.
