麻豆约拍 Radio 2 visits the 麻豆约拍 Proms as the John Wilson Orchestra and special guests recall the musical history of the classic film studio 鈥 Warner Brothers.
Tonight, Radio 2 goes to the 麻豆约拍 Proms and a chance to hear the John Wilson Orchestra and a fabulous musical history of one of the classic film studios 鈥 Warner Brothers. Four brothers 鈥 Sam, Jack, Harry and Albert Warner. They kicked off their movie careers when they clubbed together and bought a film projector and started showing films around the mining towns of Pennsylvania and Ohio. By 1918 they had opened their first studio on Sunset Boulevard. Always at the front of new ways 鈥搃n 1927 they made 鈥淭he Jazz Singer鈥 starring Al Jolson 鈥 the 鈥渢alkies鈥 had arrived and the silent era quietly ended. Batman, Superman, Blazing Saddles, The Exorcist, A Clockwork Orange, 42nd Street 鈥 all were products of the Warner Brothers stable. Adventure, fantasy, horror, comedy ,romance and, of course, the movie musicals 鈥 My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Desert Song, Gypsy and The Music Man. Animation was also a big part of their output 鈥 Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig being some of the studio鈥檚 biggest stars. But there鈥檚 always one that got away. In 1936 Harry Warner鈥檚 daughter tried to persuade her father to buy the rights to a new novel by Margaret Mitchell called 鈥淕one With The Wind鈥 鈥 but Harry didn鈥檛 believe in the idea and rejected it!
Settle back in your seats. John Wilson and his orchestra are joined by guests 鈥 Mikaela Bennett, Louise Dearman, Kate Lindsey, Matthew Ford and the Maida Vale Singers. The evening鈥檚 selection of movie themes includes 鈥 鈥淭he Seahawk鈥(Erich Korngold) - a swashbuckling adventure made in 1940 with Errol Flynn, 鈥淭he Treasure of the Sierra Madre鈥(Max Steiner) from 1948 with Humphrey Bogart, Dimitri Tiomkin鈥檚 Oscar winning score for 鈥淭he Old Man and The Sea鈥 鈥 the 1958 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway鈥檚 novella which starred Spencer Tracy, 鈥淣ow Voyager鈥(Max Steiner) that brought us the on screen charisma of Bette Davis and Paul Henreid and Alex North鈥檚 score for 鈥淎 Street Car Named Desire鈥 with Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando. And as an encore we end with Harry鈥檚 Wondrous World (John Williams) from the Harry Potter film series.
