Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From the Reverend Kate Bottley:
Like for some of the country it’s been back to school at Bottley towers this week but we can’t complain because we’ve had an absolute belter of a summer. A holiday in gorgeous Croatia, a weekend in Glorious Glastonbury and a day in Norwich city centre. Specifically the cathedral. Which this summer decided to erect a 17 metre high, helter skelter right slap bang in the middle of their gothic nave. It made quite an unexpected sight. They weren’t the only cathedral to put on a surprising event this summer, Rochester had a crazy golf course with an estimated 29,000 people having a go.
Not everyone was happy, some said that the house of God wasn’t the place for such frivolity, but I couldn’t disagree more, for me the house of God is exactly the place for helter skelters and crazy golf, exactly the place for some unbridled joy. Because while there’s always a place for silent reflection, taking things a bit too far and holy exuberance when the moment takes you has a biblical precedent.
In the Old Testament the prophet Miriam sang and danced her way into the promised land, King David is said to have boogied with ‘all his might’ one particular wild night of worship - in just his pants, and St Paul, when locked up in prison was told to pipe down by the guards because his partying , was just too darn loud. All these holy folks making the most of an opportunity to let themselves go for God, they’d have made brilliant friends round Friday guests.
It’s not a crime to have a good time and so I was only too happy to seize the moment in Norwich and gleefully threw myself down the helter skelter 3 times, squeeling ‘weeeeeeeee’ all the way down and gaining but a happy heart for my efforts – and a friction burn... But I also snuck off to a quiet corner and lit a candle to give a silent thanks for fun and for the folk of all ages who were finding some joy in the house of the God of the Good time, remembering that while there’s plenty to be serious about in the world, that when there’s an opportunity for fun, it’s a godly obligation to always make the absolute most of it.
