A reflection and prayer to start the day with Rev Dr Lesley Carroll.
O for a thousand tongue to sing
We'll walk by faith
The power of the Cross
When I survey the wondrous cross
The Lord is my salvation
In Christ alone

PRAYER FOR THE DAY - SCRIPT 6 AUGUST 2019
Good morning. www. Imagine a world without the world wide web!Β
I remember how, as a student, I made my way to a library full of books and scanned shelves or, if I was lucky, searched the micro fiche to discover where I could find what I was looking for. Information had to be searched out – now it is at our fingertips.Β
On this day in 1991, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, founder of the world wide web introduced it as a publicly available service on the internet. Berners-Lee had a vision for a free web that would level the playing field, giving everyone, anyone, access to learning without having to ask permission.Β
He also founded the World Wide Web Foundation to defend and advance the open web as a public good and a basic right. The web has become a place for shopping and learning and communication, reaching people with little by way of disposable resources, but also a place where, on the dark web, terrible things are planned via connections not previously possible.
Everything in life has a dark side. Our best efforts and achievements have to resist the dark shadows of selfishness and self-aggrandisement.Β
I suspect most of us can’t imagine a world without the web. But its wonders also illuminate the reality of that ancient tug of war between what is good in our humanity and what is destructive, between dark and light.
Lord of Light, we pray for insight today to discern the light from the dark. And we pray for the courage to choose the light especially when it requires us to hold back our hopes and check our ambitions. Amen.
