Bog Day, Sharks and Little Sparta

Join Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith for the latest outdoor activities from Shetland to the Borders, plus the key stories for those who live and work in the countryside.

Euan hears about concerns that the Scottish soft fruit industry could be left short of migrant workers post Brexit.

Tobermory Harbour on Mull is a community hub port which means the facilities are managed by a community company for the benefit of all. Mark finds out why this method of running the harbour has benefited the area.

Scotland has long been a popular destination for field sports but could estates be doing more to attract visitors all year round? Mark hears about a new service called Ossian which aims to encourage those who usually come to shoot to try different things.

Sunday 28th July is International Bog Day. Euan hears about the events being held across Scotland including looking for dragonflies at Muir of Dinnet Nature Reserve.

Mark visits a facility near Inverness that provides a safe space for people of all abilities to try cycling.

Euan heads out on a trip off Tiree to try and spot Basking Sharks, one of the most elusive creatures in our sea and the shark we know least about.

Little Sparta is a garden in the Pentland Hills created by the poet Ian Hamilton Finlay and his wife Sue Finlay. Mark gets a tour from one of the head gardeners.

And Euan recounts the tale of the Stronsay Beast, a strange unidentified β€˜globster’ washed up on the island of Stronsay in 1808.
