Adam meets mathematical biologist Dr. Thomas Woolley from Cardiff University to learn how mathematicians can explain a leopard’s spots, a zebra’s stripes and the spread of disease.

And what can we learn from a field full of sweaty grasshoppers? In this week’s show Adam is in conversation with mathematical biologist Dr. Thomas Woolley. Thomas, of Cardiff University’s School of Mathematics, uses mathematics to understand biological processes and the mechanisms by which genes create everything from human fingerprints to the rings in a lemur’s tale. Adam talks to Thomas about his career, his research as a mathematical biologist and his mathematical outreach to prisoners at HMP Cardiff and even to theatre audiences
