Episode 2
Olympic medallist Paddy Barnes sets his heart on a different sort of medal – the Fáinne Airgid, a silver ring-shaped pin given to those with a good level of spoken Irish.
The second episode sees Paddy’s language ‘training’ intensify. Much like a fighter preparing for a big fight, Paddy spends as much time as possible getting ready for the exam for the Fáinne Airgid - the Silver Fáinne.
With the help of his fellow boxers and friends Seán McComb and Tyrone McKenna, the lads decide to put some Irish words up around the house and the gym to help them with their vocabulary. This leads to a few revelations.
Learning the time is another question on the exam that Paddy needs to master.
Paddy and the gang also take part in a training session with the local GAA team in Glasgow and hang out with some Gaidhlig and Irish speaking musicians in the local pub, all in the efforts to learn and take in as much of the language as possible.
Back in Belfast, Paddy’s wife Mari is very supportive of her husband’s efforts and is convinced that Paddy will be successful. Mari considers learning a few words of Irish herself.
Paddy goes through the notes one last time and travels down the Antrim Road to Áras Mhic Reachtain to take his silver Fáinne exam. But how will he get on? As an Olympic medallist he successfully returned with bronze from Rio and London, can he return with Silver from the Antrim Rd?
I gClár 2, éiríonn traenáil teanga Paddy níos déine. Go díreach ar an dóigh chéanna le dornálaí agus é ag ullmhú do throid mhór, caitheann Paddy an oiread ama agus is féidir ag ullmhú do scrúdú an Fháinne Airgid. Ar ndóigh, ní hionann sin agus a rá nach bhfuil an t-am aige don chraic …!!
Le cuidiú a chomhdhornálaithe agus a chairde, Seán McComb agus Tyrone McKenna, socraíonn na buachaillí roinnt focal Gaeilge a chur suas thart ar an teach agus ar an ghiomnáisiam le cuidiú leo lena stór focal. Bhí roinnt ábhar iontais ag baint leis sin …
Ar na ceisteanna ar an scrúdú atá le foghlaim de ghlanmheabhair ag Paddy, tá an dóigh leis an am a léamh as Gaeilge. Le cuidiú óna chlog dílis, ní bheidh aon dul amú ar Paddy, is é sin, má tharlaíonn an scrúdú ar a 5 a chlog …!
Chomh maith leis sin, tá Paddy agus a chomrádaithe páirteach i seisiún traenála leis an fhoireann áitiúil CLG i nGlaschú agus caitheann siad am i gcuideachta roinnt ceoltóirí a bhfuil Gaidhlig agus Gaeilge acu sa teach leanna áitiúil, leis an méid is mó den teanga agus is féidir a fhoghlaim, ar ndóigh.
Ar ais i mBéal Feirste, tugann bean chéile Paddy, Mari, an-tacaíocht d’iarrachtaí a fir agus tá sí cinnte go n-éireoidh leis. Tá Mari féin ag smaoineamh ar roinnt focal Gaeilge a fhoghlaim ionas nach mothóidh sí ina héan corr!
Téann Paddy trí na nótaí uair amháin eile agus ansin, go brách leis síos Bóthar Aontroma chuig Áras Mhic Reachtain leis an scrúdú a dhéanamh don Fháinne Airgid. Ach cad é mar a éireoidh leis? Mar bhuaiteoir bonn ag na Cluichí Oilimpeacha, tháinig sé abhaile go rathúil le cré-umha ó Rio agus Londain – an dtig leis filleadh le hairgead ó Bhóthar Aontroma?
