Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

So I had my wisdom teeth out last weekend. I was pretty worried to be honest.

Anytime I told anyone that I was having the operation they would regale me with horror stories of their experience. 鈥淥oh! Sorry to hear that. Yeah 鈥 they broke my jaw when taking mine out.鈥 鈥淥uch! You can鈥檛 be looking forward to that! I couldn鈥檛 eat properly for a month.鈥

鈥淵ou鈥檙e having them out under general anaesthetic are you? At least you wont feel the dentist鈥檚 knee on your chest as they yank it out! When I had mine he was full-on sitting on my chest pulling at my tooth.鈥 And to be honest 鈥 I had my own horror story of wisdom teeth extraction. I had my lower ones out 30 odd years ago. Compacted into the jaw bone, the operation hadn鈥檛 gone great鈥

I鈥檒l spare you the finer details but let鈥檚 just say the experience has stuck with me in a less than pleasant way for three solid decades! And so, personal history, plus the anecdotes of others, kept telling me: 鈥淒on鈥檛 do it!鈥 And I listened! I kept putting the operation off.. and putting it off鈥μ And in between, I kept getting infections鈥 and rumbling pain鈥ventually, I simply had to have them removed.

And it鈥檚 been fine! Seriously 鈥 it鈥檚 better than fine! It鈥檚 actually good! I can offer up no horror stories, and toothache rumblings are gone!

All of my wisdom teeth may finally be out 鈥 but the process has left me with this wisdom: Our past doesn鈥檛 have to define us. Neither does the past of other people. Sure 鈥 we can, indeed should, learn from history, but it is not inevitable that our history has to be our future too.

So often in life, I reckon, that we perhaps don鈥檛 take the decisions we need to, because our fears of our own past, or the past of others, hold us back. Fear ends up leading to inertia. I confess, and my wisdom teeth situation is perhaps proof, that I would rather stick with the pain I know I can cope with rather than the pain that might be in the future.

It鈥檚 a safe strategy, but I am not convinced by how effective it is anymore. Perhaps, what I have to try and remember is that wisdom in Islam is called hikmah 鈥 and hikmah is based around the ability to make well-judged decisions.
