On New Year’s Day 1957, the sleepy Fermanagh village of Brookeborough was shaken to its core by the sound of machine gun and rifle fire. A botched five-minute raid on the police station ended disastrously for the IRA with two men dead, but it also provided the foundation for a myth that helped sustain the republican movement in future years.
