Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson,Ìýwriter and vicar at large:

Ìý

Driving through north London at dusk, I glanced over a bridge to spot a heron at the side of the river. Most days, I’d drive on, but this time I parked up to take a closer look.

Ìý

It was the best 10 minutes that day – gazing at a wondrous creature which looked so out of place alongside a factory and a scrap metal yard, yet appeared so content. I remembered what first attracted me to birds when, as a ten-year-old, I saw a small flock of lapwings in Woolton Woods in Liverpool and became an instant convert.

Ìý

Actually, birds frequently convert me – I mean change my mental and spiritual state. And it’s not just me: I reckon everyone has a need to connect with nature in some way, and when we do, it changes us for the better.

Ìý

In his book about the importance of wildness, Simon Barnes speaks of two ways to enjoy nature. One is to go out looking for it: nature as a special treat. The other is to become mindful of what’s all around: nature as part of ordinary life.

Ìý

As a writer, I love to sit in the garden with my laptop. Sounds crazy, but when I’m desperate to finish a chapter or compose a PfT I even sometimes sit out in the freezing cold – wrapped in a sweater and scarf!

Ìý

Soon, the birds disregard my presence as they fly to and from the feeders. It’s impossible to say what a delight and honour I feel when woodpeckers, chaffinches, long-tailed tits – or a humble robin perches there right in front of me.

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

This may not seem to have much to do with writing. But for me, it’s how I find inspiration to write. I’d even call it prayer, which I long ago decided had little to do with words. Gazing at birds: that is prayer for me…feeling wind in my hair, lying in grass, walking in the woods or picking blackberries: these are some of my favourite kinds of prayer.

Ìý

I think we humans are wild at heart, that no matter how sophisticated we become we still need to sense a deep connectedness to nature which can help us to become more content and compassionate, more at ease with ourselves and others.
