Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

I鈥檓 not a convinced follower of social media but I do accept I cannot bury my head in the sand and pretend it doesn鈥檛 exist.

I鈥檝e decided instead to be disciplined; to recognise what鈥檚 good; make the best of it, and to resist the temptation to waste time and energy on what is useless.

I spend a little time each day culling inspirational thoughts from twitter and I occasionally re-tweet the best ones. I believe God makes the best social media for his purposes too.

Allow me to share a few helpful thoughts God sent me last week.

鈥淭here鈥檚 much in life we can鈥檛 control so don鈥檛 upset yourself trying to.鈥 That鈥檚 true. I can鈥檛 control what happens to me but I can choose how to react.听

鈥淗appiness comes by letting go of what you think your life is supposed to be like and appreciating what you have.鈥 It has taken me until now to realise that it鈥檚 my expectations which makes me unhappy not life itself.听听

鈥淣obody鈥檚 perfect and you will never be perfect either. Accept yourself as you are and learn to love your gifts AND your faults.鈥 That encouraging advice comes straight from the bible.

鈥淒o more, worry less.鈥 I wish I could really live that advice. Worry is a waste of time but I still worry about what I do and who I might offend. I should recognise by now that worry never changes the outcome.

鈥淏e humble when life is good, be strong in the dark times and trust in God and your own ability in between times.鈥 It鈥檚 easy to let success go to our heads and to let failure destroy ; easy but wrong - how we handle both shows what we鈥檙e made of.

鈥淲hen it comes to money earn it, save it and keep enough for the inevitable rainy day.鈥

Wise people know how to avoid spending money they don鈥檛 have, buying things they don鈥檛 need, to impress people they don鈥檛 know.

I now realise that when life doesn鈥檛 add up, I should begin subtracting.

But it was a thought straight from the Bible which summed up everything:听 鈥淭urn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.鈥 (Ps 34). And that鈥檚 what I call wisdom.
