Pause For Thought
Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:
Ìý
I’ve just returned from a short trip to Boston.Ìý I like flying, but my wife loves the whole airport and watching the people bit, but she’s less sure about the prospect of spending several hours in a metal tube at 30000 feet.Ìý I suspect she just tries not to think about it.
Ìý
I understand, but I am intrigued by the fact the plane stays in the air.Ìý I know how it works – the aircraft’s wings are shaped and angled to allow the oncoming air to be deflected downwards.Ìý As long as the plane is travelling above a certain speed, this lifts the plane and keeps it in the air.Ìý It looks like magic, but it’s not.Ìý
Ìý
It reminds me of a wonderful phrase in ancient Jewish literature – ‘toleh eretz al belimah’ – God somehow suspends the universe on nothing at all.Ìý Even taking jet streams into account, this feels quite true, especially when looking out of a plane window into, well, nothing.
Ìý
ÌýEven though I fly often, I want to retain my fascination and curiosity at this incredible invention and to recognise the God-given genius that brought it to the world.
I believe that curiosity is central to a meaningful existence.Ìý It’s the most important tool for
understanding ourselves, the world and God himself.Ìý I was disappointed, if amused, to hear about
a lesson delivered in a very religious school in which the teacher asked the
pupils if they could explain how a plane works.Ìý
One raised his hand and said, ‘I can.’Ìý
When asked to elaborate, he said, ‘It goes along the runway, flies in
the air, then returns to the ground’.Ìý So
much for curiosity.
Ìý
Towards the end of his life, Albert Einstein, said ‘the important thing is not to stop questioning… One cannot help but be in awe when one contemplates the mysteries of eternity… It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day.’
Ìý
I reckon any of us can stop for a moment during a busy day to marvel about the world.Ìý To see eternity in the smile of a child going to school or to marvel at the beauty of a tree on the way to work, instead of just rushing past it, or in my case, tripping over it.Ìý Almost anything can be a source of wonder and inspiration – we just need a little curiosity.
