Richard Demarco on his seven decades on the Scottish arts scene. And 100 years after the sinking of HMY Iolaire, what the tragedy meant for those on the Isle of Lewis.

Cathy speaks to a man who’s been a stalwart of the Scottish contemporary arts scene for over seven decades. Heavily involved in the Edinburgh International Festival and instrumental in creating Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre, Richard Demarco shares his passion for the arts during his long and illustrious career.

In the final of our Advent series reflecting on favourite Christmas tunes, the distinguished composer Professor Paul Mealor, who wrote the 2011 Christmas number one β€œWherever You Are” performed by the Military Wives and conducted by Gareth Malone, shares his love of β€˜In the Bleak Midwinter’ sung by the Military Wives Choir.

It was the worst peacetime loss of a British ship in British waters in the twentieth century. As the Outer Hebrides prepares to mark the centenary of the sinking of HMY Iolaire with the loss of over 200 lives, Cathy finds out what the tragedy meant for the islanders.

Margo Uprichard tells Cathy why she gave up a successful career to set up the Louise Project in Glasgow, a Christian based anti-poverty organisation that works with the Roma community.

And on the 20th anniversary of Fischy Music, founder Stephen Fischbacher, and his daughter Beth, explain how the pain of loss inspired their songs to promote children’s self-esteem and well-being in classrooms across Scotland.
