Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

There’s not much peace to be found in a house with two teenagers. The constant comings and goings of visitors, the never-ending demand for snacks, the music and the screens all simultaneously playing different things at different times, which they seem to be able to keep track of all at once, I suppose it’s not unlike this studio on a Friday morning, eh Chris?! But just lately as the weather’s got worse and the nights have drawn in, the house has seemed smaller than usual and at Bottley towers we’ve all become a little less tolerant of one another than we might usually be.

Ìý

The husband and I have found an unexpected place of solitude though and developed a habit of regathering our thoughts by going and sitting in our parked car on the drive. When the kids were toddlers it used to be them that went on a time out, but now it’s us parents that voluntarily seek several minutes of silence in the interest of self-preservation. We sit there wordlessly staring out through the windscreen until the moment has passed and we’re ready to face the adventure that parenting teenagers is, once more.

Ìý

Jesus didn’t have a car to retreat to when the disciples all got a bit too much and the call to preach, teach and heal threatened to overwhelm, but he did understand the value of coming apart for a while, before he just came completely apart.Ìý Seeking silence and occasionally solitude and just a few moments of peace before he was ready to face the task in hand.

Ìý

This weekend as a nation we’ll seek a place of peace again, a silent pause to remember a hard-fought freedom, and that moment of remembrance for me is not just about looking back in silent respect but also about equipping and enabling me to face whatever challenges lie ahead, a quiet chance to silently refuel my soul.

Ìý

So, wherever you find your few minutes of quiet this weekend I trust and pray it’ll help to carry you forward into a peace filled future.
