On October 16th 1968, John Carlos & Tommie Smith’s now iconic black-gloved salute on the Olympic winner’s podium, was televised to the world. 6 Music is marking the 50th anniversary with our Black Power Season. Cerys is joined by Kevin Le Gendre, journalist, broadcaster and author of 'Don't Stop The Carnival' to discuss the importance of The Green Book (a series of travel books written for African Americans travelling across segregated America in the mid - 20th Century ). As well as important people in history including Harriet Tubman, Doreen Lawrence, Nanny Of The Maroons, Mamie Phipps Clark, Anna Julia Cooper, Angela Davies, Albertina Sisulu and Yaa Asantewaa. Plus archive and music from James Brown, Ray Charles, Willie Dixon, Aretha Franklin, Beyonce, Nina Simone and Tyler, The Creator.
