Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

Faith in the World Week is always an important event on Radio 2.Ìý Throughout the week we’ll be thinking of peace, and people who make it happen. Anything war can do, peace can do better, is an apt way of putting it.

The First World War was supposed to end all wars but, as we’re only too aware, we’ve had 100 years of armed strife and wasteful tragedies instead.

Yet in the midst of war, there are always ordinary heroes who save us from the worst of ourselves.

This was powerfully brought home to me in recent years by a member of my own family.

I never knew any of my grand-parents; they were dead before I was born. My father’s father was different though. He died when my dad was just a child. The result was none of us knew anything about Grandfather D’Arcy, except that he died in the First World War.

Two years ago a local history group researched Fermanagh people who died in the Great War. That was when I discovered the sad details of John D’Arcy.

He was 35 years old and the father of 5 young children, when he answered the call as an Irishman to join the British army. It was a troubled time in Irish history and one prominent Irish politician (John Redmond) told Nationalists that Ireland would be granted Â鶹ԼÅÄ Rule if they signed up for the war effort.

And so my grandfather, in middle-age, went off to train as a soldier. Shortly afterwards he was part of the regiment of soldiers sent to the front at the start of the offensive.

He, and hundreds of his companions, was killed on his very first day in battle, the 15th August 1914.

His wife wasn’t told of his death until 13 months later when the news that he’d died in battle and that his body would never be found, was relayed to her and her small children. There’s a brick with his name on it, in a memorial wall in Turkey.

That’s why none of us knew much about grandad because he was one of the thousands of quiet, peace heroes we should never forget this week or any week.
