As we close this week's contribution to Radio 3's Into the Forest season, looking at the magical influence of the woods on music and the arts, the afternoon starts with Dvorak's The Golden Spinning-wheel, a fairy tale featuring the forest, played by the 麻豆约拍 National Orchestra of Wales, under conductor Thomas Sondergard. Then we travel to France for a concert featuring excerpts from Georges Enescu's Suite No. 1, Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Evegeny Kissin as soloist, and Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen Suite - again a piece where the forest plays a significant role - finishing with Kodaly's Dances from Galatea. Lawrence Foster conducts the Orchestre National de France. The afternoon closes with Bartok's dark opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle, performed by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Jaap van Zweden. The bass Mikhail Petrenko is Bluebeard and the mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung is Judith.
