In Their Footsteps
50 years on, Mark Patterson completes the route of the 1968 Duke Street march, with the original organisers, bystanders, and those who were hurt when the march was stopped.
On October 5, 1968, the RUC used batons and water cannon to break up a civil rights march at Duke Street in Derry. At least 30 people were injured. The march, which was followed by two more days of serious violence in the city, is regarded by many as the start of The Troubles. 50 years on, Mark Patterson completes the route of the 1968 Duke Street march, with the original organisers, bystanders, and those who were hurt when the march was stopped, and discusses the legacy of that day.
