Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

My husband and I have been together for about 25 years, so you’d be forgiven for thinking that our dating days are well behind us. I know I did. So, I was quite taken aback when I received a text last week from my other half telling me to keep Monday free because Graham was taking me out for the day.

Ìý

How exciting! Perhaps a matinee at the theatre or cocktails in a swanky bar? Hoping for clues I texted him back, ‘What shall I wear?’ ‘A waterproof jacket and some good boots’ came the reply.

Ìý

And so, Chris, that’s how last Monday I found myself in a windy field beside the A1 with my beloved by my side, on a tractor driving and axe throwing experience.

Ìý

I had an absolute blast. Laughed until my tummy hurt, channelled some anger and learnt a new skill. He was better at the axe throwing and I showed him how it’s done in a tractor. The best bit though, was spending the day with my best friend. Taking time out to be in each other’s company

Ìý

The bible is full of examples of beautiful friendships, my favourite is the Old Testament story of Ruth and her mother in law Naomi. After the death of Ruth’s husband, Naomi’s son, Ruth refuses to return to her own family and to leave Naomi alone, saying ‘Do not press me to leave you, where you go, I will go, where you lodge, I will lodge, your people shall be my people and your God, my God.’

Ìý

To have someone, to have a friend, who is willing to say, ‘I will walk with you’ not just today, but for as long as I am able, is a pretty splendid thing and worth, I think, investing in.

Ìý

I don’t know what our next day out will be, but I’m already looking forward to it. And I do like to think a man must really trust his wife if he’s willing to take her to learn how to throw axes.
