Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Μύ

Yesterday, news broke of the death of activist Claire Wineland, aged just 21. She had cystic fibrosis from birth, and had recently had a lung transplant. Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke soon after, and did not come out of the coma. Μύ

I came to know of Claire through the extraordinary documentary series, β€œMy Last Days” – the brainchild of actor and film-maker, Justin Baldoni, who wanted to produce reflections on living life to the full through the stories of those who are dying.

Claire’s story really struck me, for here I was watching a beautiful soul, working her way through what many of us may consider terrifying – her own mortality.Yet Claire was adamant that the focus should not be on her ending – something which she felt we have no control over, but rather to focus on whether we are proud of our lives, whether we are making our lives a piece of art, and relishing the joy of simply trying.

Claire’s strength of living powerfully shone through. The end of the documentary showed Claire giving a speech – aged just 18 at the time. She declared that she was genuinely proud of her life, not because she didn’t feel pain, or sadness, or suffering, or loneliness. β€œThat’s what it means to be a human being”, she declared. β€œBut what I am saying is that pain, that suffering, that sadness, is beautiful.”

Claire believed that society benefited from us continuously looking for happiness out β€œthere” beyond our own selves, but that we are never going to be happy with what we get, unless we are happy with what we have.
The Muslim poet Rumi wrote of searching the world for The Divine, and ultimate peace and happiness. After looking high and low, in mountains and in valleys, in religions and in philosophy, Rumi pronounces, β€œFinally, I looked into my own heart and there I saw God; He was nowhere else.”

Claire left indelible marks on this world. She refused to be defined by her illness, or by her own mortality. ΜύRather, she was a powerful advocate of striving to live the best life possible, and of finding peace within. In her short life she beautifully demonstrated that what counts, is not the number of years in our lives, but the quality of life in our years.
