RHS Nerines trial
Only a very few of the 25 species of Nerines are known to be fully hardy in the UK. Of these, N. bowdenii is one of the most reliable. As a result, a diverse range of cultivars have been developed over the years since it was first introduced into cultivation in 1898.
For each participant in the trial, three to five bulbs were planted with the tops of the bulbs just above the ground approximately 25cm apart. Starting in 2012, the trial was originally meant to run for three years. This was extended to allow the plants to become fully established with the trial finally ending in 2017.
A final report of the results has now been published, including a full description of each of the varieties which achieved the Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
