Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Writer Abdul-Rehman Malik:

Μύ

Chris, as you know, I used to be a high school teacher and I often look upon that time with nostalgia. I imagine myself the hip, engaged, passionate educator unlocking the potential of young minds by teaching them to think freely and learn deeply - a self-styled James Dean of teaching.

Μύ

Alas, memory has a habit of obscuring reality and the universe has a way of making you remember that reality bites. As the tens of thousands of teachers who are finally enjoying a much-needed break right now can testify, all that work of opening hearts and minds is gruelling. This last week I was reminded of how exhausting it can be.

Μύ

I found myself in a cramped church garden in the Dutch city of The Hague, trying to deliver a workshop on storytelling to a group of 13-17 year olds. It was deliciously warm outside and they pretty much wanted to be anywhere but there.

Μύ

My little class of hot and bothered teens had come from different places in Europe. For many, it was their first time travelling out of their home countries. Most of these kids also belonged to youth groups run by their local churches or mosques and they had been sent to this special camp to learn ways in which people of different beliefs and cultures could find common ground. But it’s summer, I could see them saying to themselves, it’s time to play.

Μύ

β€œI still get wildly enthusiastic about little things,” exclaimed the legendary American educator Leo Buscaglia. β€œI play with leaves. I skip down the street and run against the wind. I never water my garden without soaking myself. It has been after such times of joy that I have achieved my greatest creativity and produced my best work.”

Μύ

So we ended up playing. We played tag, told ridiculous stories about everyday objects and brought their ideas alive through drama. When, at the end of the day, they each told a story of why they wanted to build a better world, I felt victorious.

Μύ

Like John McCrae’s title character Jamie from Dan’s triumphant musical, most kids – and adults – are bursting express themselves. It’s our job to make it easy for them. Getting them there might be exhausting, but it’s wonderful – and that’s makes it all worth it.
