Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

Like most people, I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with my body. It’s always been so. Recently I was looking back at photos of myself from the first holiday I took without my parents, 18 years old, fresh from finishing A levels and away for 2 weeks travelling with the man I would eventually marry, we weren’t dating when we left home, we were when we arrived back. And as well as the pictures making me nostalgic, they also made me a bit sad, a younger me on the beach in a massive t shirt and long trousers, I thought I wasn’t the right size or shape to wear a bikini, or even shorts.

Ìý

So, imagine my fear when yesterday I was invited to record ‘The Naked Podcast’, two fabulous Â鶹ԼÅÄ women chatting body image and yes, you’ve guessed it, both presenters and guest are wearing their birthday suits, starkers, in the buff, nude, naked. With nowhere to hide my nerves and visibly shaking we sat down to record. And do you know what, we had a right giggle, we chatted stretch marks and cellulite, healthy eating and crash diets and I quickly forgot that any of us had no pants on. Just bodies. Beautiful bodies.

Ìý

The bible has many instructions on caring for the health of our bodies, but the verse that stands out is ‘your body is a temple of God’s Holy spirit’ For most of my adult life I’ve wished my temple didn’t have quite so much room. But the verse says something about our bodies being special to God, the place where God choses to live, and a blessing, and if God sees my body that way, who am I to argue? Mine has grown two babies in it, got me over mountain ranges, swam rivers and seas and carried me around for the last 43 years, I probably shouldn’t bad mouth it.

Ìý

And do you know what I did? Yesterday after the recording finished I went straight out and bought myself that bikini. To heck with it, my body, your body, our bodies are amazing and all bodies are beautiful whatever their size. I had great time yesterday Chris, but I think that was quite enough naked radio for me, I’m very glad Pause for thought is fully clothed, although…having said that, how would our lovely listeners even know?
