Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D’Arcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

Football has taken over the world this weekend and will send nations into both agony and ecstasy. Sport should be fun and the World Cup should be a gigantic sign of unity. However I tend to agree with Gary Lineker who assured us that “football is a simple game. Twenty two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and in the end the Germans win.â€

It’s fitting that the World Cup should begin on the weekend we celebrate Father’s Day. Strangely, I often receive Father’s day cards even though I’m not a father. In church this weekend I tried to reflect on my own father’s influence on me.

He was typical of his generation. He never once told me he loved me.  It wasn’t the ‘done’ thing in those days. Hand on heart, I always knew he loved me – he didn’t have to tell me. He sacrificed his own life to provide a better future for us without a word of complaint.

He rarely preached about how I should treat others. I picked that up watching how he treated people. Attitudes are caught as well as taught.

I can’t remember him telling me I did well playing football. He himself was a talented sportsman. But I watched for that smile of approval sliding across his face every time I got the better of an opponent.

I always knew he believed in me and that is still the greatest gift he gave me.

He didn’t want me to become a priest because he thought I liked music and sport too much. Yet when I decided to give it a go, he did all he could to help me.

I often shed a tear now when I look at the photo taken on the morning of my ordination 49 years ago. My poor father is kneeling on the cold earth asking me to bless him.

That reminds me of the father who one night heard his little son pray: ’Dear God make me the kind of man my daddy is.’ Later that night the father himself prayed: ‘Dear God make me the kind of father my son thinks I am.’
