Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

I鈥檓 always nervous officiating at marriages because I鈥檓 conscious of being an old bachelor who knows next to nothing about modern marriage. So I just tell the couple to feel free to ignore me.

The truth is that I really wanted to get married myself but being a catholic priest I wasn鈥檛 allowed to. I would have been a better, more grounded priest if I had married. The ancient scholar Socrates got it right when he said: 鈥淢y advice to you is to get married. If you find a good wife you鈥檒l be happy and if you don鈥檛 you鈥檒l become a great philosopher.鈥

Years ago I heard the legendary 麻豆约拍 personality Frank Muir being interviewed. He told us he鈥檇 been married for 39 years to a girl he met 鈥渉alf way between the beans and the toast in the 麻豆约拍 canteen.鈥

He reflected on how his marriage survived so long in show-business. He said that even though he and his wife came from different religions, they prayed together every night. Each ended their prayer with 鈥淚 love you鈥.听

Typically, Frank then said that when the tabloids asked him if he ever told his wife he loved her, he could honestly answer. 鈥漎es I have 鈥 at least 14,235 times.鈥

The point is that marriage is held together not by chains but many little threads of human kindness. It鈥檚 more likely to be a lack of friendship rather than a lack of love which leads to an unhappy marriage. Experience tells me that we ought to go on falling in love over and over again 鈥 but with the same person every time.

I like to remind each couple that healthy relationships are built on the twin pillars of respect and trust. Once trust is broken I believe it can鈥檛 be repaired. We can certainly start over again, but it will be a new relationship even when it is between the same people.

As I head towards 2000 marriages in nearly 50 years of ministry, I鈥檒l continue to remind them, as an old bachelor of course, that a good marriage is not when the perfect couple come together; it鈥檚 when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences. 听听听
