Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

I鈥檓 heading to a conference on Artificial Intelligence 鈥擜I鈥攍ater today. Perhaps because I was a major Terminator fan when I was a teenager, I carry a deep-seated concern about the power of machines.

And the data should perhaps make us sit up and listen:

The Japanese entrepreneur and billionaire, Masayoshi Son, talks of 鈥渟ingularity鈥濃攖he point where AI surpasses human intelligence. He believes we鈥檙e just 20 years from that moment, and he lauds the idea that AI machines could have IQs of 10,000. Einstein鈥檚 IQ was said to be 200. Son thinks machines will take over all sorts of jobs鈥攏ot just the robots in factories, but even the roles of doctors, lawyers, engineers鈥 DJs? Surely not鈥.

AI proponents are really excited by the idea that machines can solve the problems that have thwarted humans.

It could be argued that we haven鈥檛 done a great job with the planet鈥攚ars which have left tens of millions dead, weapons that have poisoned not only the land but the genetic materials of generations, not to mention global warming. There is perhaps an intelligent logic to the fictitious Skynet machines of the Terminator movies deciding to wipe out the humans.

Yet is there something special about us that makes our existence worth our failings?

The story of humanity鈥檚 creation as told in the Qur鈥檃n has the angels questioning God鈥檚 wisdom; Will you create something that will spread chaos and bloodshed?鈥 They say. 鈥榃hereas as we are obedient and praise your limitless glory.
God replies鈥斺淚 know that which you know not.鈥 听In other words 鈥 God knows what is best. 听And goes on to 鈥渢each Adam the names鈥 鈥 to give Adam a level of intelligence and reasoning.

The Qur鈥檃n is telling us that there is something so wonderful and beautiful about human beings鈥攊n all our imperfection and chaos. There is something so important about freewill, that makes our very creation worth the mistakes that we will make.

The Qur鈥檃n is under no illusion as to human鈥檚 weaknesses 鈥 forgetful, imperfect, negligent. Yet, despite that knowledge 鈥 God created us anyway, because there is something special about human intelligence and human choice.

Technology is changing the world. AI has the potential to change it beyond all recognition.
Yet, I believe, we should cling on to our humanity, despite our failings. God saw beauty in it, and so should we.
