Pause for Thought
Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:
Ìý
It’s been an extremely busy week down at the Belovskis.Ìý In a week of wonderful, joyous occasions, I’ve officiated at two weddings and celebrated our daughter’s engagement.Ìý And on Saturday, it was the bar mitzvah of our second son, Shmuel Yosef, as he’s just turned 13, the age at which he now thinks he’s a Jewish adult!
Ìý
There are many ways to celebrate a bar or bat mitzvah, the equivalent for a girl.Ìý Then there was the family who decided to throw the most memorable and spectacular bar mitzvah party.Ìý They rejected the bar mitzvah safari as passé and felt that too many people had already done the submarine bar mitzvah.Ìý So they rented a spaceship to host the first ever space bar mitzvah.Ìý When the day came, the spaceship took off with family, friends and the rabbi on board.Ìý When it returned, the Jewish Chronicle reporter interviewed the first person off the spaceship – the boy’s grandmother.Ìý How was it?Ìý the reporter asked.Ìý She replied, ‘OK’.Ìý And the speech?Ìý ‘Alright’.Ìý ‘How was the food?’Ìý Again, ‘OK’.Ìý ‘Just OK?Ìý What was wrong?Ìý Why aren’t you more enthusiastic?’ ÌýGrandma sighed, ‘There was no atmosphere’.
Ìý
My son Shmuel Yosef gave an excellent speech to 100 family and friends and then read a very long passage from the Torah scroll on Saturday.Ìý He was loud, funny and confident and we are really proud of him.Ìý We didn’t go on safari, underwater or to outer space, but we’ve had a lot of fun and I hope it’s been meaningful for Shmuel Yosef.
Ìý
It might seem a lot to expect from a small boy or girl, especially the child of a rabbi who lives constantly in the public eye.Ìý But our experience is that kids thrive on taking responsibility for a presentation for some sort, preparing and then delivering it in front of a supportive, loving audience, rooting for their success.Ìý It does wonders for their self-confidence and sense of autonomy where they otherwise have little control and few choices.
Ìý
The great Rabbi Zusha said that when he dies, God won’t be asking him why he wasn’t Moses, but why he wasn’t Zusha.Ìý I hope and pray that the bar mitzvah experience has taught Shmuel Yosef to try to be the best version of himself rather than measure himself against the expectations of others.
