Pause for Thought
From the Reverend Richard Coles:
Μύ
You must have seen on the internet those two men reunited in Africa with the lion they had kept as a cub in London? Someone caught on camera the moment they renewed their acquaintance in Kenya. Full grown, the lion comes padding over the rocks towards them and breaks into a run. Most would flinch, but they donβt, and fortunately when he leaps it is to lick them, rather than eat them. Years after he loped off into the bush, he recognises his humans, and delights to see them again. Not a dry eye in the house.
Same thing happened to me on Wednesday, only instead of a lion in Kenya, it was
a sausage dog in Telford. I was in passing through town, and called in to see
Frankie, born in the Vicarage three years ago to our sausage dogs Audrey and
Horatio.
Μύ
Would he still remember me? Yes he would; as soon as I came in he hurtled towards me, tail wagging in a transport of delight, and with commendable disregard for bourgeois convention, thrust his snout energetically into my unmentionables. βMore tea, Vicar?β asked my host, in the traditional fashion, as I winced. In spite of the indignity, I was overjoyed that after all these years he still knew me and delighted to see me again. Good boy!
Whatβs that about? Confirmation, I guess, that love can transcend time and
space and even species; and although we may wander halfway across the world,
and further and further from home, there are still moments of recognition, when
we know who we are, and what we are about, because we are loved.
I think of Mary Magdalene in the garden at dawn on Easter day, suddenly
realising the man in front of her is not the gardener, as she thought, but
Jesus, whose love has transcended time and space and even the grave. So she
reaches out to embrace him - but he says, βdonβt cling to meβ, because thereβs
no holding on to something like that. Itβs the treasure that loses all its
value when you try put it in a safe.
For the proof of love is the letting go - which Frankie finally, thankfully,
did, and scampered off to play with the other dogs in the garden without a
backward glance. Good boy.
