Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Μύ

I was in Barcelona this weekend, which was especially lively because of St George’s Day – the patron saint of Catalonia.Μύ Barcelona really makes a celebration of the day, roses and books are exchanged, and of course there are also lots of dragons.

We were in Barcelona to celebrate the slaying of our own dragon – the dragon of our daughter’s illness, which has been the source of great pain and trial for six long years.
Last week, on her 19th birthday, she was discharged from all hospital services.

It has been a long, hard journey, with ups and downs that are difficult to describe, but we feel really hopeful that her illness is in remission, and that she can now build her life.
All through the difficulties with her health I would ask, β€œwhat is the Merciful trying to teach us? What lessons can we learn?” and although it has been extraordinarily hard, I do try to focus on what positives can be taken away.

I believe that when you are brought to your knees, trials have a way of making you humble.

Knowing pain and struggle can make it easier to be more compassionate.

And one hopes wisdom increases with the richness of learning through experience.
But my greatest takeaway from these years?Μύ Well it is as the Muslim poet Rumi puts it, "The wound is the place where the Light enters you."Μύ I was either going to be broken by being broken, or I was going to accept that being broken somehow allows more space for Love, and Light, and God.

The Qur’an says that with hardship there will be ease as well. Often through these years the tunnel was so long it wasn’t possible to see light at the end of it, so I had to acclimatise my being to find whatever tiny light could be gleaned along the way.
And now?

I like where we are. Our imperfect family is a place of love and compassion. I’m amazed and astounded by the truly wise and beautiful human my daughter has become. I wish she did not have to suffer the way she has done, but I cannot change that. I can however be truly grateful for where we are, and I just have to accept that there was no other way to get here.
