Pause for Thought
From Dave Tomlinson,Ìýwriter and Vicar of St Luke’s Holloway in London:
Ìý
Last week at a routine eye test, I was pleased that my optician was the same Muslim woman who’s checked my eyes for several years. She knows I am a vicar and we have enjoyed numerous conversations about life and faith.
Ìý
She told me about her recent visit to Syria to offer her professional services to people living with the appalling consequences of terror and conflict. In one village which for safety reasons she had to leave before nightfall, she noticed some children who desperately needed her attention. It was already time to leave but she asked her guard if he could get her back safely if she stayed longer. ‘There will be risk’, he replied.
‘But can you get me back?’
‘I’ll get you back’, he said.
Ìý
In one of those unexpected moments, my eyes filled up, right there in the optician’s chair. ÌýAppropriate in a way.Ìý Whether it was down to her courage and compassion or the reminder of human suffering in the world, I was moved and felt an affinity with a beautiful woman of a different faith, and with children who are pawns in circumstances beyond their comprehension or control.
Ìý
Sudden eruptions of emotion – whether of sorrow or joy – can be inconvenient or embarrassing. But actually, I reckon they are signs that we are alive on the inside. Whether goosebumps, tears or raucous laughter, the experience of being moved is what makes us human. I believe it’s also a universal shortcut to a sense of divine presence.
Ìý
Sitting in the warm sunshine in my garden yesterday a woodpecker went back and forth from the feeder, taking food to its infant sat on the fence. I stopped writing my sermon, and just sat, feeling the sun’s smile, the reassurance of birdsong, and the sense that I am part of a living community on earth. ÌýI never want to forget the wonder at seeing our first child born – of holding all our children in my arms – of going to my first football match or waking up to a street covered in snow. Feeling ecstasy or indeed sadness tells me I am alive.
Ìý
However, I think the important thing is to use that emotion to make the world better – for someone. And that’s what my optician teaches me.
