Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Julia Neuberger Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

We finished Passover last Friday night, the week when we Jews eat unleavened bread- matzah- and nothing ‘risen’, with yeast in it. I’m sure it’s very healthy, and we certainly overdose on our five a day fruit and vegetables all week. But I find matzah amazingly indigestible, and a slice of normal bread after a week without feels like a real treat!

Once Passover starts we begin counting the ‘omer’, (the omer is a Biblical measure for grain). We count aloud each of the forty-nine days between Passover and Shavuot, Pentecost. Some say that the counting represents spiritual preparation for Shavuot, the festival of God’s giving of the Torah. It’s also a time of semi-mourning, during which orthodox Jews don’t listen to instrumental music, or conduct weddings. Those of us who are less traditional tend not to observe those restrictions, but we do do something special during these 7 weeks. We take what we regard as the core of Torah, God’s law, the duty to help those in need. And we observe that more than usual- we ask our congregation to bring food every time they come, to give away to homeless people or those using food banks, as once in Biblical times they would have brought animals and grain to sacrifice to God.

The journey from Passover to Pentecost, Shavuot, from freedom from slavery to willingly, as free people, taking on the duties of God’s law, is a spiritual one. Marking that acceptance of God’s law by adding to normal gifts, going beyond the standard 10%, is an essential part of this season. You shall love your neighbour as yourself, it says, right in the middle of the Torah if you open out a scroll of the law. He- or she- is just like you. Today she’s in need. Tomorrow it may be you. We have a duty to give, but the freedom to carry out that duty by choice. The question for this season of the seven week journey is whether we will exercise that freedom to improve the lives of others.

‘Meanwhile, I’m off for another lovely slice of normal bread...’
