Wild daffodils
Our native daffodil, Narcissus pseudonarcissus, is also known as the Lent lily because it often flowers during Lent in March and April. It tends to be smaller and daintier than the daffodils we grow in our gardens, with much paler petals. It likes to grow in damp woods and fields, and was once a very common sight in England and Wales until it suffered a dramatic decline in the mid-nineteenth century. These days it can only be found in scattered populations, mainly across the west. It thrives in Monty’s orchard where it has been left to self-seed over many years. It has taken time to bulk up, but has been well worth the wait.

The Victoria Medal of Honour
In March 2018, Carol was awarded The Victoria Medal of Honour for her outstanding services to horticulture. It is the highest accolade the Royal Horticultural Society can bestow on anyone and we are immensely proud of her! Only 63 medals can be held at any one time in recognition of Queen Victoria’s 63 year reign, and fellow recipients include Gertrude Jekyll, Christopher Lloyd, Beth Chatto and Roy Lancaster.
