Lawyer-detective Matthew Shardlake returns in the fifth of C J Sansom's Tudor mysteries. Shardlake and Barak set off for Hampshire to interview Sir Nicholas Hobbey about the circumstances surrounding his wardship of the Curteys children, Hugh and Emma. On the way they have a troubling encounter with an old friend.
