Women in TV and Film 2017
Success of women in TV and film in 2017; rising numbers of homeless women and children; women of colour in mainstream media;.
2017 has been a big year for women on screen. Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman have been some of the highest grossing films at the box office, and on TV, The Handmaid's Tale captured the attention of audiences around the world. But is there still progress to be made when it comes to more roles for women in this industry? Is this being reflected in the numbers of them behind the camera? And are we now seeing them play a more diverse range of character.
Recent Department for Communities and Local Government statistics revealed that 3,648 children and pregnant women in Birmingham were living in temporary accommodation. Other figures show that one in 88 people in Birmingham are homeless, giving it the fourth highest rate in England. Jess Phillips MP for Birmingham Yardley and Polly Neate, Chief Executive of Shelter join Jenni.
Have new media channels such as YouTube done more for Black British women over the past decade than the mainstream media in 30 years? Jenni speaks to journalist and Chief Sub at Gal-Dem magazine, Kuba Shand-Baptiste and Communications Blogger Madeline Wilson-Ojo.
