Dark Nights: Kirsty Logan, Pippa Goldschmidt and Geoff Allan

Author Kirsty Logan, former astronomer Pippa Goldschmidt, and bothy expert Geoff Allan share their recommendations inspired by the dark nights of winter.

On today's programme, Edi asks her guests for recommendations inspired by the dark nights of winter.

Author Kirsty Logan describes herself as a professional daydreamer, and is known for her love of dark fairy tales. Her choice is a classic children's book, Joan Aiken's The Wolves of Willoughby Chase.

Geoff Allan has visited every bothy in Scotland for his guidebook The Bothy Bible, and has experienced his share of dark nights. He's recommended the expansive sounds of Mogwai's album Every Country's Sun.

And astronomer-turned-writer Pippa Goldschmidt encourages everyone to enjoy the night sky, and to watch a documentary which she loves. Nostalgia For the Light is set in Chile's Atacama Desert, and tells the parallel tales of astronomers looking for the furthest reaches of the universe, and local women coming to terms with the country's violent past.

Plus Edi dons her warmest woolly hat as she sees how ice sculptures are created, and our archive selection is the account of a man coming to terms with a literal loss of light in his life.
