Brassed Off Remembered
Grimethorpe Colliery Band are still referred to as 'the stars of Brassed Off'. As the band celebrate their 100th we recall the film's 15th anniversary back in 2011.
The award-winning film 'Brassed Off' has given the Grimethorpe Colliery Band a unique calling card in the music world and is possibly their greatest success to date. In 2011 we celebrated the film's 15th anniversary in a special programme that featured contributions from band members and the film's writer/director Mark Herman plus of course music from the soundtrack.
Mark Herman recalls standing in the middle of the band with Peter Postlethwaite, and being almost overcome with the beauty of the sound. We hear how Tara Fitzgerald took to playing the flugelhorn, and of course we hear the music that, in the film at least, won them the crown as National Champions in the year that saw the closure of 'their' pit. Presented by Frank Renton.
