Care worker back pay; IVF price cap; Car fires
The government's plan to get care companies to reimburse workers underpaid for 'sleep-in' shifts. Plus, how an IVF 'price cap' could solve inequalities in IVF provision.
Care workers who may be owed up to six years of back pay after being paid less than the minimum wage will have to wait for up to another year for the money, following an announcement by the government. It has announced a scheme for social care companies that incorrectly paid workers for 'sleep in' shifts. The government says the scheme is necessary to maintain important services for people who access social care, whilst also ensuring workers are paid fairly according to the law. Some care providers have said the huge bill could force them out of business.
Would capping the cost to the NHS of IVF treatment increase how many cycles are offered to patients? Professor Geeta Nargund from CREATE clinics believes so, and is working within a group advising the NHS about how much it should have to pay. It comes as new research reveals that only 24 out of the 208 Clinical Commissioning Groups in England provide the recommended three free cycles of IVF to women under 40.
We ask why car manufacturers do not have to automatically investigate when one of their cars develops a fault that causes it to spontaneously burst into flames.
