Pause for Thought: : β€œIt is not your job to finish the task at hand, but neither are you free to desist from it.”

Β From Julia Neuberger Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue

Poppies are appearing everywhere in preparation for Remembrance Sunday, ranging from standard to large, from jewel encrusted to simple paper... It’s now become commonplace to wear them, remembering those who died and recognising the service they gave.

For a variety of reasons, we’re having our Remembrance Shabbat service this coming Saturday, a week early. It’s always very moving, with the Last Post being sounded, with readings from those who served in both world wars, and with the roll of honour of those members of the synagogue who perished serving in both World War I and World War II being read out.

This year, we’re doing something a bit different. In previous years we’ve had a sermon about the nature of remembrance, or how the poppies started. This year, however, we’re taking some of the names on the World War I list, researching them, and then talking about the individuals. Who were they? What did they do before they were killed? Did they volunteer- as it seems many of them did- or were they called up? Some of them were children of recent immigrants from Russia, Poland, Germany, Holland- how did they feel serving under the British flag? Some of them would undoubtedly have had relatives fighting on the other side.

We’re doing this because remembering individuals makes us understand a bit better. The Sea of Poppies at the Tower of London a few years ago emphasised brilliantly the scale of the losses, of the misery and deaths. This year, we’re not forgetting the scale, but remembering the people, their loves, their achievements, their hopes- unfulfilled all too often-, their fears. And then we’ll say kaddish, the mourners’ prayer, for them, as well as for all who perished.Β This year, in our minds and hearts, it will be real people we remember, as well as the huge numbers.Β

The rabbis taught us: β€œIt is not your job to finish the task at hand, but neither are you free to desist from it…..” Those who perished could not finish their tasks. Our task is to remember what they could not finish, and to try to be worthy successors to them, remembering them for good.
