Pause for Thought: 'My neighbour is not defined by their proximity, race, or creed.'

From the Reverend Richard Coles:

Once or twice, I have accidentally wandered into a revolution. The last time was in Cairo in 2011, where I’d gone to make a documentary about ancient Egyptian tomb burials in the Saqqara necropolis, but arrived during the protests following the overthrow of President Mubarak and his replacement by the Muslim Brotherhood’s Muhamed Morsi.Β

It was a time of great tension. There were police, and soldiers, and armoured cars everywhere, which did nothing for tourism: upside, we got a suite at a five star hotel for the cost of a B&B in Hunstanton, its beguiling luxury in contrast with the aggro in the streets. It was also Ramadan, the Muslim time of fasting, so the city was eerily quiet as we traveled around with our local driver and guide.

On the first day we stopped for lunch, and found ourselves the only diners in a very nice restaurant, so I asked the driver and guide to join us, but they declined and went to sit outside - fasting, of course, how insensitive of me. So my colleague and I ate a delicious lunch, looked after by half a dozen over-attentive waiters, and then set off for our afternoon appointments.Β

As we made our way, I asked the driver if he minded sitting outside while we ate and drank.Β  He said not at all, you are not obliged to fast, so don’t worry about it. I asked him how he would break his own fast at sundown and he said, β€œOh, I’m not a Muslim, I’m a Christian, I’m not fasting". So why did he not join us for lunch? I realised what he was going to say before he said it, and blushed the colour of a pomegranate. β€œI prefer not to eat while my Muslim colleague fasts,” he said.Β

In this Faith in the World Week on Radio Two we’re asking, who is my neighbour? I like to think it is not defined by proximity, or race, or creed, or commitment of any kind. It is everyone, and - shame on me - to everyone I owe the courtesy, consideration and care the Christian driver showed to the Muslim fixer. Peace be with you.
