When I was about fourteen, I already had my entire life mapped out. I had decided that I was going to become a lead guitarist in a band. Although Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton might just have the edge on me for the moment it would only be a matter of time until my skills advanced beyond the chords of C, F & G and I would go on to conquer the world.

Decades later I can honestly declare that I did indeed go on to vastly expand my playing abilities from those measly original three chords to what now must be almost twelve! But the real obstacle to my achieving superstardom and standing alongside the likes of Mark Knopfler was the fact I taught myself to play.
听
When we teach ourselves to do anything, we鈥檙e almost always certain to make mistakes and when those mistakes become ingrained, they are incredibly difficult to remove.
听
In almost any field there is so much more we can achieve if we find ourselves a teacher who will be able to look at what we are doing and tell us when we are doing it well or showing us how we could do it better.
听
Judaism says that the most important thing of all is our life! Precisely, the same formula applies to it as learning how to play the guitar, learning maths or a language, or in fact any other project.听 We need a teacher, we need a guide.
听
After all, we are too often focused so narrowly on ourselves to be able to stand back and see the big picture and where we fit in it. Think of the last time you looked at the group picture from a wedding you attended. Whose picture did you look for first?
听
So let鈥檚 pray that we can always find a mentor and a guide who is really good and passionate about helping us to master the guitar, maths, a language, and especially the most important project of all: you!
