Carer's Summit, Charity Bags and Pudsey Wants Your Round Pounds

Linda McAuley champions the cause of consumers in Northern Ireland, helping them solve their problems and make the right choices.

This week: Linda meets carers at the Carer's NI summit to discuss the results of the biggest survey to date on the state of caring in NI.
1 in 5 carers haven't had a day off from caring for more than five years, and 9 out of 10 people who care for a child with disabilities haven't had a week off in over a year. This is partly because suitable care isn't available or costs too much and to put that into perspective, the care they provide is worth a staggering Β£4.6 billion a year. Three carers share their courageous stories with On Your Behalf, Michael, Ann and Margaret.
Michael cared for his father and now cares for his mother, Ann's mother has dementia and she's had to make the difficult decision to let her go to a care home, and Margaret's son, now in his 20's, has autism and severe learning difficulties. She had to give up work to care for him.

Also, charity bags through the door - the fundraising regulator has now said that charities, "should not deliver the bags if householders put up a sign by their letterboxes saying 'no clothing bags' or 'no charity bags'". Is this good or bad for reputable charities? How much of the donated items actually end up in a charity shop? How much is sold abroad for private profit? And what about the number of plastic bags that end up in landfill? Neil Irwin of NIFundraising.org speaks on the new rules and regulations.

And after Sunday the 15th of October, the round pound that has been in circulation for over 30 years will no longer be accepted on the high street, but if you've still got some you can give them to Pudsey! There are over 500 million round pound coins still in circulation and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Children In Need's Dominic O'Neill tells us of the great work they could do for children and young people.
