Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

Radiant with spray tan and sparkling with glitter, I made my dance debut on the Strictly launch show, broadcast tonight, but recorded on Tuesday at the 鶹Լ studios in Elstree. In the front row, cheering me on, were three vicars in dog collars:David, my partner; Kate Bottley, fellow Pause for Thought contributor; and Lucy Dallas, the real life Vicar of Strictly, in whose parish the studios stand.

During a quick-change back stage I saw them framed on a TV screen, looking like theChurch of England’s naughty step on a big night out. Out of place, some would say, in that sparkly showbiz world, though none of us think so; but people have rather fixed ideas about where clergy belong. In church, in the parish, in achaplaincy in hospital or prison - all good places to be, but not only in those places. Summoned to go wherever people are found, we inevitably turn up far from zones of familiarity. A hundred and fifty years ago it could have been “darkestAfrica” (inverted commas), where men in beards and dog collars came paddling up uncharted rivers into worlds as distant and unfathomable as any they could conceive.

There they settled, adapting to local conditions, and discovering, as wealways do, people there live lives just as rich and complex and busy with light and shade as our own, and that it behoves the visitor to shut up and learn before doing anything else.

Strictly is not “darkest Africa” but is nevertheless unfamiliar and challenging to me (rather like my paso doble is to them) and adapting to local conditions can be quite demanding. Just because somewhere is unfamiliar, challenging anddemanding it does not mean you cannot go there. Quite the contrary. I often think of the disciples in a their storm-tossed boat seeing Jesus walking on the water and crying out to him to save them. What does he say? Get out of the boat.

Get out of the boat: the comfortable, the familiar, the steady.

Step forward into something dynamic, unfamiliar and challenging, with a heel lead and a cha cha cha.
