Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

The Reverend Kate Bottley, a Church of England priest in North Nottinghamshire:

A couple of weekend’s ago I cracked out the tie dye, got a henna tattoo and put flowers in my hair as the Bottleys rocked the festival vibe. There were loads to choose from - Glastonbury to Carfest North and South and of course this weekend coming there’s the Radio 2 festival in a day at Hyde Park. Ìý

Ìý

We chose the Greenbelt festival in Northamptonshire, and it was fab. There’s something about a festival - the world seems a gentler and kinder place. My avid festivalgoer mate Dave can testify to the kinder part. When Dave lost his wallet at a festival a little while back it looked like it might spoil his weekend. ÌýHe retraced his steps, double checked the portaloos and tried praying to St Anthony, the patron saint of lost things, but to no avail. Eventually he decided to ask at the lost property office, it was a long shot. But it paid off sure enough the wallet had been handed in. Dave had resigned himself that maybe his cards might still be there but the cash budgeted for the weekend was certain to be gone.

ÌýImagine his surprise then when not only were credit cards found safely tucked inside but also all the cash, Dave decided to count it just to be certain, 20, 30, 40. Dave could have sworn there wasn’t that much in his wallet when he lost it and then tucked among the tenners he found a note, it read ‘I guess you’ve had a stressful time, thinking you’d lost your wallet, so here’s an extra twenty quid to buy yourself a little something. Have a great day.’

Ìý

The Bible says ‘Whoever brings a blessing on others, will themselves be blessed.’ Doing good feels good and even though kindness is its own reward I suspect that Dave wasn’t the only one who benefitted from the act of generosity I think the mystery giver probably did too, rightly feeling good about what they had done. Generosity is contagious and kindness catching, not only did generous gesture turn Dave’s day from a disaster into a triumph, the story of the mystery giver makes everyone’s day Dave tells it to, keeping the festival joy alive for longer and I for one think that’s a bargain for twenty quid.
