Pause for Thought: "I鈥檒l award stripy crowns of goodness to everyone, who opens their wallets today for others."

From Comedian & writer Paul Kerensa

Three decades ago, I was a child in need, of much hospital care. I used to think I was so poorly I was even born in a hospital 鈥 then I realised that was quite common.

I was born with a rare bladder condition 鈥 yes, that least fashionable of body-parts. Today鈥檚 trend of making a heart-shape with your fingers 鈥 where鈥檚 the trend of making a wobbly bladder-shape with your fingers instead? Our day will come.

So I grew up in and out of that famous children鈥檚 hospital 鈥 Great Ormond Street, just a mile east of here.

Like on this show today, we鈥檇 request songs, from hospital radio 鈥 I kept asking for new release Radio Gaga, so that ages me.

And like on this show today, the odd celebrity popped in too. (I鈥檓 not saying anyone here is odd 鈥 although the mix of Craig David and Peppa Pig is unexpected). I was five, so I had to be told who some celebs were 鈥 some footballer called John Barnes, a princess called Princess Anne. On her visit, I gave her my self-drawn artwork: 鈥楾he Stripy Crown of Goodness鈥. I鈥檝e still got her Buckingham Palace-headed reply, saying thank you for the Stripy Crown of Goodness, and how she wishes she could wear it.

A different sort of encouraging paperwork was sent by my namesake, Paul, the Apostle. Half of the New Testament are his letters to different communities: No drawings of striped headwear, but there鈥檚 a lot about goodness.

To the Galatians, Paul wrote 鈥淟et鈥檚 not grow weary of doing good.鈥 To Hebrew Christians he urged, 鈥淐onsider how to spur one another on, toward love and good deeds.鈥 To Titus, Bishop of Crete: 鈥淲e must learn to devote ourselves to doing what鈥檚 good, to provide for urgent needs, and not live unproductive lives.鈥

We鈥檙e still learning, two thousand years on, and the urgent needs are still there. I鈥檓 out of the children鈥檚 hospital now 鈥 well, I鈥檓 38. And I was lucky 鈥 with a world-beating hospital, a fab family, and a manageable condition. But take away just one of those, and boy oh boy, girl oh girl, do those youngsters need help.聽

So I鈥檒l award Stripy Crowns of Goodness to everyone, who opens their wallets today for others. As a former child in former need, from the bottom of my heart, or indeed, bladder, a huge thank you.
