Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From the Reverend Richard Coles:

I was fifty-five this year, neither young nor old, somewhere between knowing what’s number one and your first hip replacement. In my area, the NHS, gawd bless her, chooses to celebrate this milestone by offering Bowel Cancer Screening. A camera mounted on a thin flexible tube illuminates the place where the sun don't shine, looking for abnormalities that can indicate a problem. Left untreated, there can be awful consequences. It kills around 15,000 people a year in the UK, although I'm happy to say that number has reduced by more than 40% since the seventies, thanks in large part to early detection

Β It’s a no-brainer - of course we should get tested - so I accepted the offer, called to arrange an appointment, and put it to the back of mind. A week before I was due to attend a packet arrived in the post, which I thought at first was a new mobile but, slightly disappointingly, discovered to be a home enema kit. I did the necessary and presented myself at the endoscopy unit at my local hospital, filled in a form, got in a gown, was talked through the procedure. Then I was asked if I wished to take part in the trial of a new piece of equipment, which looked like something Q would give 007, but in fact preceded the camera into the rear to open things up that it get a better view. Of course, I said yes, and in no time I was watching on a monitor its progress through my intestines,Β  a slightly uncomfortable procedure enlivened for me by a medic giving a rousing rendition of the theme tune from Strictly. I'm happy to report all was as it should be and five minutes later I was having a cup of tea and discussing Aston Merrygold’s pliΓ©.Β

Β I'm sure some of you will be wincing at the thought of this, but some of you will also have those abnormalities and a test could save your life, and those who love you much grief. In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses sets before the people of Israel God’s offer of a choice between life and death. Choose life, he said, choose life.
