The Lurkers in Conversation

Lammo hears from The Lurkers and Martin Mills as Beggars Banquet turns 40. We also launch the Silvery Prize 2017, the chance for you to pick the best album from a pre-Mercury year.

Lammo hears from The Lurkers and Martin Mills as Beggars Banquet turns 40.

The Beggars Group has grown over the years to encompass some of the most iconic and eclectic indie labels of all time, counting 4AD, Matador Records, Rough Trade Records and XL Recordings among its roster. Its origins, though, lie with the DIY punk scene of 1977, and more specifically, with The Lurkers. Born out of a record shop basement, the label's first release was the band's classic single, 'Shadow'. Now, Martin Mills. co-founder of Beggars, and The Lurkers themselves, join Lammo to retrace the first steps of the legendary label.

In the week that the nominees for this year's Mercury Prize are announced, we'll also launch our very own Silvery Prize 2017. In this annual event we pick a pre-Mercury year, and ask you which album should have won the prize if it had existed.
