Pause For Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

Ìý

I have a daughter, Ruth, and she’s the apple of my eye. We’re just back from Montpellier in the South of France where she lives. This time last year she got married – we have a French son-in-law, Nico, how special is that? It was a great ceremony, we had a lovely day but it was just family and that turned out to be not quite enough. She wanted a party that all her friends could come to. So, a year later, we did just that in a field far from the beaten track. It was wonderful –Ìý a day of distilled and uncomplicated happiness. How often does that happen in these bewildering times?Ìý

Ìý

Ruth is a very brave young woman. She has mental health issues and she’s always believed that such things need to be faced and addressed openly rather than hidden away in shame. At the heart of her wedding party, three of her friends read out the words of a song that topped the French charts three years ago, just at the time when Nico and Ruth got to meet. It’s sung by a co-operative group called Fauve and it’s called Blizzard. It’s all about someone with mental health issues. It’s powerful. ‘One day you can think you’re a saint and the next a wild animal’, a lover declares. ‘You hate yourself and you smash things. But believe me when I tell you how wonderful you are. Together we can push all this stuff back. Just put your arms around my neck. We can tell the blizzard and sadness to get lost. Together we can find dignity, discover love, rise to the very heights of the universe. Giving up on life is a crime, life is the deal of the century, it’s a red hot chili pepper.’

ÌýÌý

I shivered with excitement as I heard these words. I’m so proud of that girl and I love the boy who’s taken her as he found her and who’s such an anchor for her. I preach love from my pulpit. They prove it every day in the life they live.Ìý
