West Dean Gardens
Laid out in the 1890s and 1900s, West Dean has now been extensively restored. Harold Peto's 100m pergola and the sunken garden have both been completely rebuilt and replanted to restoring the garden to its originalΒ Edwardian glory. The spectacular glasshouses in the walled garden have been repaired and the garden itself planted as a working kitchen garden that is now the jewel in the crown of West Dean.
A huge variety of plants - from peaches to peppers, cucumbers to coleus, aubergines to orchids - grows in the numerous glasshouses and frames. Out of doors are orderly rows of cabbage, carrots, lettuce and beetroot, alongside herbaceous borders in rich reds, oranges and yellows. No space is wasted: the kitchen garden has over one mile of walls covered in more than 200 different trained apples, pears and plums.

St Mary’s Therapeutic Garden
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin in Lewisham has, for many years, had a vision for reaching out and supporting people with poor mental health in their recovery. The therapeutic value of green spaces and gardens is well established, as they are places of calm and beauty. Over the last three years this vision has begun to be implemented through growing links with the Ladywell Mental Health Unit. Gardening is known to be excellent therapy, and a small group already garden regularly together in the churchyard, and have formed close ties and friendships.
